On 5 January 2025, the first Sunday of the new year, we held the installation, dedication and introduction of our 2024-2025 Local Church Executive Committee (LCEC) on 5 January, at our Worship Services.
The LCEC is made up of a dedicated team of church volunteers who are committed to serving the Lord through ministry leadership. We thank God for our faithful brothers and sisters in Christ who have stepped forward to serve!
During the installation at the 9am Service, it was a moving moment as the names of our LCEC members were called out one by one, filling up the entirety of the stage. Pastor-in-Charge Rev David Gwee addressed the leaders, encouraging them to do their best for the Lord through their ministry. This is certainly a welcome reminder of our theme for 2025: Strengthened Spiritually to Serve Faithfully.
The LCEC is introduced to the congregation at the 11am Service.
What does the LCEC do?
“Have general oversight of the programme of the local church in pursuing the primary task of the local church.”
– Book of Discipline of the Methodist Church in Singapore
The installation & dedication is an annual event that allows the church to learn who its leaders are. It is also to thank them for accepting their obligation and challenge them to live out their life in Christ, to offer their best to God, to the church, and to CCMC’s ministry in the world.
Loaves+Fishes took the opportunity to get to know some members of the 2024-2025 LCEC with three rapid-fire questions.
Tan Bee Cher | Recording Secretary
1) What does church ministry mean to you? 2) How do you feel about serving in ministry leadership?
I was recently invited to join the LCEC. I’m thankful that God had called me to serve in this capacity. Serving in LCEC/various ministries has given me a deeper sense of accountability to the church's spiritual and operational growth.
3) Tell us one interesting thing about yourself
I used to run a marathon annually to keep fit. It was an incredible experience that taught me a lot about perseverance and self discipline.
Lena Soh | Assistant Recording Secretary / Church Archivist
1) What does church ministry mean to you?
In my role as Church Archivist, it is a chance to serve God's people.
CCMC turned 30 years old last year. It was 30 years ago that my husband Terry and I made the choice to switch from another church to CCMC. It was so that my two sons (then about two or three years old) would have a good Sunday school as the church was smaller than the one we switched from.
There are quite a number of CCMC pioneers that I don't see anymore, and some who still worship at CCMC. I see my role as a pivotal one, to be able to document the Church's journey through them. May God’s grace be with me as I gather the resources to get this done!
2) How do you feel about serving in ministry leadership?
It's a great responsibility because this is something new for me. I am humbled that I am one in a dedicated group, some of whom have given years to serving God. They are good examples of faithfulness to God.
3) Tell us one interesting thing about yourself
I wasn't born into a Christian family but became one through marriage. I was baptised a few years after my children. God gave me a chance to teach Sunday School at CCMC so that I could learn the Bible from a child's eyes.
My parents became Christian only in their 70's. My brother, sister and brother-in-law chose to become Christians also in later life. God has been good to me. I seek His redeeming grace on the rest of the family and I know that it is in His time. I pray that God anoints with the right words at the right time, and to have the Lord's favour for this prayer.
Nicholas Merrow-Smith | Committee Chairperson, Property Management
1) What does Church Ministry mean to you?
Many things; growing in fellowship, bonding with others in the church, growing in Christ together, bearing witness to the glory of God as we go about growing the ministries He has placed us in.
2) How do you feel about serving in ministry leadership?
Honoured to be asked, willing to learn, participate and contribute where I can.
3) Tell us one interesting thing about yourself?
I like a bit of adventure. When I first met my wife, Jen, she was into water skiing and I owned a powerful motorbike, so we would ride out to Ponggol at the weekend and ski near Coney Island. One weekend I fancied a change. Malaysia had just opened the North-South Highway, so we hopped on the bike around 7am and were riding along Gurney Drive in Penang enjoying the sunset that same evening.
Shaw Mei-Shaan | Committee Chairperson, Worship & Music
1) What does Church Ministry mean to you?
Serving in ministry is a natural outcome of being transformed by God’s Word. We are saved for (not by) good works, and ministry is an avenue to give back to the church and work out our faith. Serving in the Worship & Music team has been such an enriching experience for me personally because I get to use my God-given gifts, and learn from so many who are on fire for the Lord!
2) How do you feel about serving in ministry leadership?
I was honestly surprised to be asked to step into leadership. My first thought was, “who am I, to lead God’s beloved and precious ministry and congregation?”. It is definitely not a responsibility to take lightly! But I firmly believe that when God calls, He equips. My role as a ministry leader is to attune myself to the Holy Spirit, because the Worship & Music ministry belongs to the Lord. It is His vision that will sustain and flourish it. I count myself truly blessed and privileged to be in partnership with Him to grow our ministry members, and serve the congregation through worship services!
3) Tell us one interesting thing about yourself
My friends will know I absolutely love animals of all kinds (yes, including reptiles and sharks. Just don’t throw a cockroach at me!). I even considered becoming a veterinarian. The irony is I am allergic to fur, though it doesn’t stop me from cuddling the family dog, and any other animal I encounter!
Lai Mun Loon | LCEC Steward (PPRSC Secretary)
1) What does church ministry mean to you?
Church/Christian ministry is my response to the love God’s has showered upon me unconditionally, sacrificially, and immeasurably.
I see it as my service to God through loving His Bride (the Church) and His beloved (His people); and we all must love one another (which is ministry in itself!) so that the world will know we are His disciples!
That is what Church Ministry means to me.
2) How do you feel about serving in ministry leadership?
I serve in ministry leadership by the mercy of God as Paul had commended us to do in 2 Corinthians 4:1, that being called to this ministry was not by my own works but by His mercy. That reminds me to remain humble in service because none of this was because of what I had done but what He has done for me.
My second mantra that I remind myself daily whether serving God in the marketplace or in church is that I work unto the Lord as exhorted in Colossians 3:23, what whatever I do, I do with all my heart, as working for the Lord.
These two principles guide me in my service, as the Lord’s servant to His beloved Church.
Ministry leadership is about being a servant first, and ‘know my place’, helps me serve in His mercy. So we must always keep our church leaders in prayer.
3) Tell us one interesting thing about yourself
While I often look serious, I am told I’m actually quite funny.
